Not Ashamed

I will not be ashamed of you, Father.

I will not be ashamed of you, Lord.

I will not be ashamed of you, Spirit.

I’m gonna worship you.

I’m gonna worship you.

This song is simple. As you can see, it’s just a few words put together and repeated a couple of times. The song is simple, but it has a new, deeper meaning to me.

We were singing this song in church and I looked up and saw one of my good friends (who just so happens to be my best friend’s boyfriend) killing it on the drums in our praise band. I mean, he was just all into it. Then I look right next to me and see my own boyfriend and one of my very best guy friends, who both just graduated from high school. Almost every Sunday, another one of my best friends is there right next to us. If I’m not sitting with them, I’m helping lead the worship songs. Almost all of my other friends go to church every Sunday, also, just not our church. But how blessed am I to be in the lives of all of these people my age that want to worship?

Us high schoolers always sit in the front pew. I’m not sure why, but we always sit together and we always sit up front, in the same pew, every Sunday. And as we sang this song about not being ashamed of God, I couldn’t help but think about us high school (or college) kids.

As a senior in high school, I know all about being awkward and uncomfortable. Sometimes, sharing your faith, especially with classmates that definitely don’t have the same beliefs, can be pretty awkward. A lot of kids are afraid to stand up about it, they don’t want to be judged or put down. Sometimes it can be weird, even with your own church congregation. Trust me, I speak from experience. Our church doesn’t kneel very often, but every once in a while, people will go up to the front and kneel and pray. I’m not sure why, but I feel scared to do that because I’m younger than everyone else that kneels. Which seems kind of crazy, but maybe you can relate to a similar situation. It’s just uncomfortable sometimes.

But. We can’t grow if we don’t have to endure anything a little out of our comfort zone. And sometimes, you just have to stand up, put a hand or two in the air, and praise. Not caring what anyone else thinks. Unless they’re thinking, Wow, I want to know what got into these guys and how do I get it? That’s exactly what I saw my friends doing in church and I have to smile just thinking about it. We are not ashamed of our Father, Lord, Holy Spirit. We don’t care who knows it! We don’t care that we’re young, and we don’t care that it might not be popular or cool.

Please, my young friends, stop hiding your faith for fear of judgement. Have confidence in Him. The people that don’t want to listen to you are the people that need our words and love the most. DO NOT BE ASHAMED.

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God that brings salvation to every one that believes; to the Jew first, and also to the Gentile.”

Romans 1:16

Blow wind, blow.

Burn fire, burn.

Blow wind, blow.

Burn fire, burn.
